The Winter Sounds describe themselves as “epic indie new wave dance folk and punk anthems with unique instrumentation and a high energy live show.” Originally from Athens, GA, they now call Nashville, TN their home.
Just to get it out of the way, it’s hard to have a band that so prominently features the violin in this day and indie rock age and not at least mention Arcade Fire. That being said, these guys actually have little in common with said musical behemoths-- save for maybe the energy they bring to their performances, which is ample. Their bio claims seminal post- punk Gang Of Four as a major influence, which I totally see, and I’d hazard a guess to say that there’s probably a fair amount of early Cure, Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, and Fugazi that gets played in the van as well.
(I’m especially partial to frontman Patrick Keenan’s faux- British delivery, a style that singers as venerable as Joey Ramone, Carrie Brownstein, and Billie Joe Armstrong have previously employed.)
The Winter Sounds most recently recorded with producer Scott Solter, who has worked with such heavyweights as Spoon, St. Vincent, and Okkervil River. (!) Their forthcoming effort, entitled Runner, is set for a Spring 2012 release, with a tour sure to follow.
